Frank Paulus's 1917 lithograph "Your country is at war" is a recruiting poster aimed at men between 18 and 35, and its copy spells out the terms plainly: service with the U.S. Navy for the duration of the war, through the Naval Militia. The United States had entered the First World War in April 1917, and the Navy needed sailors quickly, so posters like this one pressed the appeal in direct, personal language. Its subjects, battleships and gunboats, point to the sea service as the main draw. The print is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection at the Library of Congress.
