Orphelinat des armées," printed in French above a list of promises for the children of war, was designed by Frank Brangwyn, a British painter and muralist who was born in Bruges. The Avenue Press in London issued it as a lithograph in 1915. The text lists what a small orphan should receive: a home and maternal tenderness, an education in the countryside, a trade suited to each child, and the religion of their fathers. Such appeals were used to raise money for Belgian families who lost their breadwinners and their livelihoods after the German invasion of 1914.
