Frank Brangwyn, the Welsh-born painter and designer who was made an Associate of the Royal Academy, drew this 1915 wartime cartoon for the Daily Chronicle, a London newspaper. It casts the Roman god of war, Mars, as a supplicant before Vulcan, the god of the forge, asking for weapons and shells. The lithograph reflects Britain's struggle in the early years of the First World War to turn its factories and workers toward munitions production, a effort that shaped the home front as much as the battlefield.
