Frank Brangwyn, a painter and decorative artist born in Bruges, drew this 1915 cartoon for the London Daily Chronicle, and its title sets up the scene: Mars, the Roman god of war, petitions Vulcan, the god of forge and metalwork, for weapons. The lithograph casts the munitions effort as a classical bargain between war and industry, a framing that suited the British press at a time when shell output was a public concern. Brangwyn's bold, muscular figures show workers and gods sharing one heavy, labor-filled world, which makes the poster worth noticing as wartime propaganda that presented factory labor in heroic terms.
