A man standing in the foreground gives scale to the mission at Tumacacori in southern Arizona, a site the Jesuit Eusebio Kino visited in the late 1600s and the Franciscans later developed. By the time this albumen print was made around 1870, the mission had long been abandoned, and its weathered walls drew travelers and photographers interested in the old Spanish frontier. The print comes from a series of views and portraits of Arizona and its Native peoples by Charles Gentile, part of a body of work that recorded the territory's landscapes and communities in the years after the Civil War.
