A man in a suit rests his hand against his chin, a pose that photographers of the early 1900s often used to suggest thought or quiet dignity. The record gives no name for the sitter and only a tentative date of about 1906, so the picture is best read as a portrait of a type rather than of a known individual. Its printing-out paper, which darkened in daylight rather than being developed in a darkroom, was a common choice for studio and amateur portraits of the period. The careful lighting and composed stance reflect the conventions of portrait studios of the time, when a sitter's bearing was meant to convey respectability and self-possession.
