Published as a centerfold in the April 26, 1911, issue of *Puck*, this color lithograph is titled *The helping hand* and pairs financier J. Pierpont Morgan with Uncle Sam. The title's irony suggests the cartoon presents Morgan as a benefactor of the nation, a claim its satirical readers would have questioned. Morgan's firm had shaped railroad consolidation and industrial mergers for decades, making him a frequent target for critics worried about private capital's sway over public affairs. Credited to J.K. after a design by Renouf, the print uses the magazine's full-page color format to make that argument.
