Leonardo da Vinci's mural of the Last Supper fills the wall of the refectory at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, and this photograph shows the room as it looked around 1900, when the painting had already been treated as a national treasure for generations. The fresco was painted in the 1490s for the Dominican friars who lived at the convent, and Leonardo worked in an experimental oil-and-tempera technique on dry plaster, which made it fragile from the start. Visitors of the period came to study its composition and the reactions of the apostles, and this album page, part of a tour of European cities, records it as one of the sights of Milan.
