The Mission Santa Barbara, as this c1890 view by N.H. Reed shows it, is one of the best-known Spanish colonial churches in California, founded by Franciscan friars in 1786 as the tenth mission in the chain stretching up the coast. Reed was a Santa Barbara photographer who sold sets of scenic California views, and this print carries the series marking "No. 3" and a U.S. Copyright Office entry on its reverse. Its twin bell towers and whitewashed walls became a model for the Mission Revival style that spread across the state in the decades after the photograph was made.
