Few places in California drew more sightseers than The Geysers, the steaming hot-spring country in northern Sonoma County, and this stereograph takes its viewer to a spot labeled the Devil's Pulpit. Made around 1880, when the area was a resort reached by stagecoach, the card was meant for a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth that a flat print could not. Stereo cards like this were a common parlor entertainment, and views of unusual natural wonders gave armchair travelers a way to see places they might never reach. Andrew Price's name on the card identifies it as the work of a working photographer of the period.
