Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, the Russian physiologist, appears here in a photogravure, an intaglio process that gives the image the soft tonal depth of a hand-pulled print. The portrait was taken by the Lafayette studio and reproduced by Emery Walker, a British photo-engraver known for exacting work. Pavlov had won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research on digestion, and by the 1920s his conditioned-reflex experiments had made him one of the most recognized scientists in the world.
