Here the focus is a medicine pipe held by a Piegan man named in the record as Broad Tail, which ties the portrait to a specific sitter rather than a generic type. The Piegan, today usually called the Piikani, are one of the Blackfoot-speaking peoples of the northern Plains, and their sacred pipes were cared for within particular families and ceremonies. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1910 for his multi-volume project *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as plate 199 in volume six. Curtis often arranged sitters and objects for the camera, so the pipe and dress reflect his staging as much as everyday life.
