Few portraits from the 1880s show a child of Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader, and this cabinet card is one of them. The mount identifies the photographer as D.F. Barry of Bismarck, in what was then Dakota Territory, where his studio made portraits of American Indian sitters and settlers alike. The sitter's name, Crow Foot, appears in the record, and the photograph dates from the years after the Hunkpapa people's surrender and their confinement near Standing Rock. Cabinet cards like this one, mounted on stiff card stock, were the common studio portrait format of the period.
