Built by Robert Stephenson and Company in England, the locomotive known as the John Bull arrived in New Jersey in 1831 and went to work on the Camden and Amboy Railroad, which carried passengers and freight between Camden and Bordentown. It is one of the oldest surviving American steam locomotives, and by the 1890s it was valued as a relic of the country's first generation of railroading. This c1893 photograph shows the engine as a historic object, and the title's word "original" reflects how it had come to stand for the early railroad era. Its British design, with a small boiler and a leading four-wheel truck, is worth noticing when compared with the larger American engines that followed.
