Unlike the many army-post and river views Fouch produced, this card turns to a hot spring, and its imprint places the work at Fort Keogh in Montana Territory. The post was established in 1876 on the Tongue River, and the label on the back ties the card to a series of stereoscopic views of the Yellowstone country. Viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, such cards gave viewers in the East a three-dimensional look at distant landscapes most would never visit. Fouch's images help document how the region's springs and geysers were becoming known to the wider public in the late nineteenth century.
