Titled simply "Statue of St. John Nepomuk," this view most likely shows the famous bronze figure on Charles Bridge in Prague, the saint who is traditionally honored as the patron of bridges and of those who keep confidences. Legend holds that he was drowned in the Vltava in 1393 on the orders of King Wenceslas IV, and the statue, erected on the bridge in 1683, stands near the spot where tradition says he went into the river. The print comes from a bound album of European city views, which suggests it was bought as a travel souvenir. Its five-starred halo, a common feature of the saint's image, is worth a closer look.
