This Vienna view of a statue of Emperor Francis I stands apart from the other entries in its album, which otherwise move through Italian and French cities such as Genoa, Pisa, Milan, and Verona. The record's title names Joseph, but the subject heading identifies the monument as Francis I, who ruled Austria from 1804 until his death in 1835 and oversaw the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806. Statues of Habsburg rulers were a familiar feature of the Austrian capital, and a print made around 1900 shows how such monuments stood in the city's public spaces in the decades before the empire's collapse in 1918.
