The reclining marble figure of Saint Cecilia in this photograph shows her lying on her side, a pose that looks unusual for a saint. Stefano Maderno carved the statue around 1600 for the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome, after the saint's tomb was opened in 1599 and her body was reported to lie in that position. The sculptor followed the reported details, including the wound at the neck, which is why the figure seems to rest rather than stand. The work became one of the most copied sculptures of the Baroque period.
