A fence of slatted snow fencing stands against drifting sand and loose topsoil in Oklahoma, a scene that shows how the plains were being reshaped in the mid-1930s. The Dust Bowl drought and years of plowed, unprotected grassland had turned the region's soil into dust that wind carried for hundreds of miles. Federal soil conservation crews adopted simple barriers like this one, borrowed from northern winter practice, to slow the wind, trap sediment, and give vegetation a chance to take hold. Photographs like this one documented those early erosion-control efforts.
