A halftone reproduction of a drawing by C. Colin places two Spanish conquerors, Hernando de Soto and Hernán Cortés, in the Inca camp at Cajamarca. It was printed in a 1902 book on the conquests of Peru and Mexico, and its caption stresses the order of the Inca court and the reverence shown to the ruler by his subjects. The meeting itself is imagined: Cortés conquered Mexico, not Peru, and the real encounter at Cajamarca in November 1532 was between Francisco Pizarro's small force and Atahualpa. The picture shows how popular histories of the period often merged the two conquests into a single dramatic story.
