Vitachuco, the Native leader in this scene, appears in the Spanish accounts of Hernando de Soto's march through the Southeast from 1539 to 1543, and this print shows his meeting with the Spanish captain. It is a halftone reproduction of a drawing by George Gibbs, published in 1898 as a plate facing page 56 of Grace Elizabeth King's *De Soto and His Men in the Land of Florida*. Gibbs's drawing reflects how late nineteenth-century illustrators pictured sixteenth-century encounters, and King's popular retelling helped shape that imagery for American readers. Halftone printing, which let drawings like this run alongside text on the page, was by then common in book publishing.
