Few American figures were more often reproduced in the nineteenth century than George Washington, and this hand-colored lithograph carries the nickname that clung to him, "the father of his country." Nathaniel Currier issued it from his shop at 2 Spruce Street in New York, where his firm produced inexpensive pictures for a wide public before his later partnership with James Merritt Ives. Dated between 1835 and 1856, the sheet shows how Washington's likeness served as a shared civic emblem, hung in homes and schools as a reminder of the founding generation. Hand coloring makes each surviving impression a little different in tone.
