Few portraits of George Washington show him as a Freemason, which makes this chromolithograph unusual among his popular images. Washington joined a lodge in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1752 and stayed active in Masonry for decades, including taking part in the Masonic ceremony for the U.S. Capitol cornerstone in 1793. Philadelphia printers P.S. Duval & Co. issued this color print from a design credited to J.F. Queen, reflecting the lasting appeal of Masonic images of the first president in the decades after the Civil War.
