A son of a sharecropper combs his hair in the bedroom of a plain shack in New Madrid County, Missouri, in this May 1938 view. The county lies in the state's Bootheel, where cotton plantations depended on tenant and sharecropping families who often lived in small, sparsely furnished homes. The Farm Security Administration sent photographers into such communities during the Depression to document rural living conditions, and the Office of War Information later took over the file. The original negative is missing, so this survives as a film copy.
