Hovey's Cocoa Glycerine, sold as a preparation for preserving and dressing the hair, is the product this lithograph promotes, and the print dates to about 1860. Boston lithographer J.H. Bufford is credited as its printer, and the copyright notice names S.D. Hovey. Manufacturers of toiletries and patent remedies in the mid-nineteenth century relied heavily on eye-catching color prints like this one to attract buyers. The catalog record draws on an older caption card that has since been revised, so the attribution and date are worth treating with some caution.
