Wolcott's Instant Pain Annihilator promises relief in its very name, a boast typical of the patent medicines that flooded American markets after the Civil War. Lithographs like this were inexpensive to print in quantity and were pasted on walls, shop windows and fences to draw buyers. Many such remedies were sold with little oversight and contained alcohol, opiates or other strong ingredients, a problem not addressed by federal law until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The record dates the print to about 1867 and credits Royal L. Wolcott with the copyright, but those details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
