Children gathered around apples give this 1932 lithograph its particular character, and the fruit points to Mexico's open-air schools of the 1920s and 1930s. Those schools held lessons outdoors, partly to improve children's health through fresh air, sunlight and better food, and they became a visible part of the country's postrevolutionary effort to educate its young people. The initials DR on the print are generally read as those of Diego Rivera, the muralist who was then central to Mexico's modern art scene, and the simple, rounded figures reflect the social concerns that ran through his work of the period.
