Mary Cassatt's drypoint *The Stocking* shows a mother bending over to pull a stocking onto a young child's leg, a quiet domestic moment she returned to often. Cassatt, an American who worked mostly in Paris, dated this print to 1890, when she was developing her printmaking alongside her paintings. Drypoint is made by scratching lines straight into a copper plate with a needle, and the raised burr from that scratching gives the printed lines a soft, velvety richness. This impression carries a handwritten French note in ink, and its catalog number places it in Breeskin's listing of Cassatt's prints.
