Few objects in a late nineteenth-century house were less glamorous than a heating register, which makes this 1899 color lithograph for the Foster Side Wall Warm Air Register an unusual display. Warm air systems of the period pushed heat from a central furnace through ducts to grilles set into walls and floors, and manufacturers competed for builders and homeowners with catalogs and eye-catching trade prints. The poster was produced by the Courier Lith. Co. of Buffalo, New York, a commercial printing firm. Details on the caption card are unverified, so the exact date and use should be treated with caution.
