The 1888 hand-colored lithograph "Darktown lawn party: Music in the air" shows a lawn gathering named in its title and belongs to Currier & Ives's Darktown series. The series, issued by the New York firm in the 1880s, used exaggerated caricature and minstrel-show stereotypes to ridicule Black Americans, and its prints circulated widely in the years after Reconstruction, reinforcing demeaning views of African Americans. Its humor rests entirely on those stereotypes, so today the prints are most useful as evidence of the racism of their period and of how popular illustration was used to shape it.
