*A Darktown Tournament, the First Tilt* borrows the vocabulary of the medieval joust, turning a chivalric contest into a mockery of Black Americans. Published by Currier & Ives in New York in 1890, it belongs to the firm's *Darktown* comics, a series of racist caricatures that portrayed African Americans as buffoons and reinforced stereotypes used to justify segregation and exclusion. The series sold well in its day, and historians now study it as evidence of how commercial lithography spread racial ridicule. It is best viewed as a document of that prejudice rather than as entertainment.
