The record gives this portrait of a Mexican boy the title "Freak," a term that reflects how disabled people were displayed as curiosities in the early 1900s. A.R. Alexander registered the print for copyright around 1915, which suggests it may have been made to be sold or circulated rather than kept as a private family picture. Images like this were common in traveling shows, medical catalogs and novelty postcards, where the subject's condition became the entire point. Today the picture is more useful as evidence of those practices than as a record of the child, whose name the record does not give.
