Boys in Scout uniforms gather around an open cooking fire at Camp Ranachqua, the setting that gives this print its particular character. The Boy Scouts of America had been organized only a decade earlier, in 1910, and by the time this photograph was made around 1919, summer camps like this one were becoming central to the movement's effort to teach boys woodcraft, self-reliance and teamwork. The print was registered for copyright by the New York photographer W.D. Hassler, whose studio issued many scenes of youth life in that period. Its record also hints at how popular outdoor cooking had become as a symbol of camp life.
