This cabinet card shows Major C.B. McLellan's camp on Clear Creek in Arizona in March 1887, while the party was traveling to Fort Thomas, a post on the Gila River in the southeastern part of the territory. The print bears the signature of Edgar A. Mearns, an Army surgeon and naturalist who photographed much of his service in the Southwest. Army expeditions of this period moved through rough, sparsely settled country, and images like this one record the tents, supplies, and daily routine of the soldiers who kept such routes open. Cabinet cards were a popular mounted format in the 1880s, so this example also reflects how military travel was documented for personal and official use.
