Few places in Arizona Territory mattered more to travelers than Maricopa Wells, a water stop on the desert crossing near the Gila River. This view shows the commanding officers' quarters at Camp Colorado, with adobe walls and thatched roofs that shaded the rooms from the desert sun. Photographer Charles Gentile included it in a series of Arizona views and portraits of tribal people, a body of work that recorded frontier posts and Indigenous communities in the years after the Civil War. The thatch and adobe construction show how the Army adapted local materials to the desert climate.
