The title casts the scene as the moment the "rebels of '76" first heard the Declaration, a phrasing that hints at the print's teasing, retrospective tone. The document was first read aloud publicly in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, in the State House yard, two days after Congress adopted it on July 4. Made around 1860, when these events had become a fixture of American patriotic imagery, the engraving shows how roughly eight decades of memory had turned the delegates into dignified statesmen. The color added by hand was a common finishing touch on such engravings and helped make them more appealing to buyers.
