The record gives this lithograph the title "The great West," and it was published in New York around 1881 by Gaylord Watson with Tenney & Weaver, a firm that issued many color prints for the American market in the early 1880s. Its catalog subject, "Country life" in the American West during the 1880s, points to the settlement era, when railroads, land companies and newspapers were promoting the plains and mountain territories to eastern families. Hand-coloring was added to the lithograph by hand, so each copy varies slightly in tone. Pictures like this one were often meant to appeal to buyers and to fix an idealized image of frontier life in the public mind.
