A river that flows north is unusual enough to catch the eye, and this view shows the New River as it enters the United States near Calexico, with Mexicali on the far side of the line. The river carries sewage, industrial waste, and farm runoff from the Mexicali Valley, and by the late 1980s it was widely regarded as one of the most polluted waterways in the country. Peter Goin included the picture as plate 41 in *Tracing the Line* (1987), a survey of the Mexican-American border that looks at how the boundary shapes the land and the communities along it.
