Few early American prints bring together a national portrait and the emblems of the states as this one does. Washington appears at the center, ringed by the state seals, a format that presents the young republic as a union of separate states under one leader. New Haven engraver Amos Doolittle printed and sold it in March 1794, when Washington was still in office and the nation was only a few years into its federal government. Doolittle, who had trained as an engraver of maps and political subjects, colored the impression by hand, which was a common finishing step for prints of this kind and period.
