James Monroe, the fifth president, is the subject here, shown in a lithograph that the Library of Congress dates to somewhere between 1830 and 1842, several years after he left office in 1825 and within a few years of his death in 1831. Lithography was a fast and inexpensive way to reproduce a likeness in the early nineteenth century, so prints like this circulated widely among readers who wanted images of national leaders. Monroe's presidency, which ran from 1817 to 1825, was known as the Era of Good Feelings, and portraits made after his death often served to honor a figure associated with the Monroe Doctrine.
