The Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, was new when this panoramic view was made, and the title suggests it shows the first practice scrimmage played on its field. The Bowl opened in 1914 as a bowl-shaped concrete stadium meant to hold far more spectators than the older college fields. This print, a wide gelatin silver photograph credited to J. H. Candel, was registered for copyright on November 14, 1914, which places it in the stadium's opening season. Its long format captures the full sweep of the seating and field in a single frame.
