The Wishham bowl is the subject here, a wooden vessel photographed around 1910 and recorded under the Tlakluit, the name Edward S. Curtis used for the Tlingit people of the Alaska and Pacific Northwest coast. Curtis made this image for *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey of Native peoples issued from 1907 to 1930, where it appears on page 140 of volume 8. Carved and shaped wooden bowls were everyday tools for serving food and important objects in many Northwest Coast communities, so the picture records a utensil within a living material culture. Curtis's staged and carefully composed studio style means the object was presented for its form and craftsmanship as much as for its use.
