Karok baskets, as photographed around 1923 by Edward S. Curtis, show the coiled and twined work of the Karok people of the Klamath River region in northwestern California. Curtis made the image for The North American Indian, his multi-volume project documenting Native American life, and this print appeared as plate 438 in the supplemental volume 13, published in the 1920s. Curtis often arranged his subjects and objects with care, so the picture reflects his choices as much as everyday practice. Basketry was central to Karok life, used for cooking, storage, and ceremonial purposes, and collectors of the period prized these pieces.
