Titled for Shoalwater Bay, the inlet on Washington's southwestern coast now called Willapa Bay, this portrait is tied to a specific place and to the Salishan-speaking people recorded in its subject headings. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1913 for his multi-volume study *The North American Indian*, which he published between 1907 and 1930; this image appeared in volume 9. Curtis often posed his sitters in older garments and styled the scenes to suggest a traditional past rather than the everyday life of his time, so the clothing deserves as much attention as the face.
