Two children brawl over a yellow-tinted street urchin in this color lithograph, a stand-in for the rivalry between Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. Both men's New York papers had competed for Richard Outcault's Yellow Kid comic, and their sensational coverage gave the era the term "yellow journalism." The caricature ran in *Vim*, a satirical weekly, in the summer of 1898, just as headline-driven reporting on the Spanish-American War was at its most heated. Its bold color printing shows how cartoonists of the period used the lithograph to comment on the press.
