Here the Captain, the gruff adult who is forever trying to keep order, faces the two mischievous Katzenjammer kids, Hans and Fritz, in a scene built on their constant troublemaking. Rudolph Dirks, who signed this drawing "Rudie," created the strip for the New York Journal in 1897, and it became one of the most popular comics of its era. The ink, watercolor and white-gouache original shows the bold linework and flat color that made the strip stand out on the page. The drawing was later shown in the 1990 exhibition The Art of the Comic Strip, which reflects how early comics came to be treated as art.
