Captain Robert Portal of the 4th Light Dragoons sits for this portrait in the kit he was issued for service at Balaklava, which Roger Fenton photographed in the Crimea in 1855. The 4th was one of the cavalry regiments in the Light Brigade, whose charge at Balaklava in October 1854 became one of the war's most famous and most debated actions. Fenton printed on salted paper, a process that gives the image its soft, warm tone and shows the uniform and equipment in fine detail.
