Roger Fenton's 1855 portrait of Major Keane shows a British officer at Balaklava, the Crimean harbor town that served as the main supply base for the British army during the war. Fenton, a photographer sent out to document the conflict, made a number of images of officers and their horses there, and the subjects listed for this print include both. The salted paper process he used required long exposures and produced soft, warm tones, which give the print its characteristic look. Because the sitter's name is written on the back, it is one of the few pictures from this series that identifies a specific officer rather than a general scene.
