Here Maj. Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman poses with his staff at Arlington, Virginia, in May 1863, a rare group portrait of a Union headquarters in the Washington defenses. Heintzelman, a West Point graduate who had served in the Mexican War, commanded a corps in the Army of the Potomac and was later responsible for guarding the capital. Arlington, across the Potomac from Washington, had been under Union control since 1861 and held many camps and headquarters. Staff portraits like this one show the officers who carried out a commander's orders, and the photograph's date was recorded in the Civil War Photograph Collection at the Library of Congress.
