Dresses printed with designs by Miguel Covarrubias, the Mexican artist who had just published his studies of Balinese art and life, are the focus of this display photograph from the Franklin Simon & Co. department store in New York. The store's display was staged for the sales floor, and the photographer's studio, Virginia Roehl's Display News Service, documented such window and interior arrangements for the trade. In the 1930s, Bali's dance, textiles and carved imagery were popular with American designers and shoppers, and Covarrubias's work helped make the island's motifs fashionable. The print offers a useful record of how retailers presented exotic fabrics to women shoppers in the years before World War II.
